Andrew J. Rong, MD

Clinical Care

Dr. Rong specializes in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery, including upper and lower blepharoplasty, revision blepharoplasty, ptosis repair, brow lifting, and individualized periocular rejuvenation. He evaluates patients with hooded or heavy upper eyelids, under-eye bags, droopy eyelids, eyelid asymmetry, and other age-related changes around the eyes. His approach to cosmetic eyelid surgery emphasizes balanced, natural-looking results while preserving eyelid function and the individual features of each patient.

In addition to aesthetic surgery, Dr. Rong treats a broad range of complex oculoplastic and orbital conditions. His areas of expertise include thyroid eye disease, orbital tumors, eyelid cancer, sebaceous carcinoma, skin cancer around the eye, eyelid malposition, tearing disorders, and complex defects following trauma or cancer treatment. He performs orbital surgery, Mohs eyelid reconstruction, eyelid and periocular reconstruction, and advanced ocular surface reconstruction.

Training & Experience

A native of California, Dr. Rong graduated summa cum laude from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a degree in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. He received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He subsequently completed both his ophthalmology residency and fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Following his training, Dr. Rong joined the faculty at Bascom Palmer and later served as Director of the Division of Oculoplastic, Reconstructive, and Orbital Surgery. In this role, he led one of the country’s largest academic oculoplastic surgery services and cared for patients with cosmetic eyelid concerns, complex orbital disease, eyelid and periocular tumors, and challenging reconstructive conditions. He later returned to his native California to join Stanford Medicine, where he continues to provide comprehensive cosmetic, reconstructive, and orbital care.

Research & Innovation

A major focus of Dr. Rong’s academic work is oculoplastic oncology, particularly sebaceous carcinoma of the eyelid and ocular adnexa. His research seeks to improve the detection and treatment of these malignancies through molecular diagnostics, biomarker discovery, tumor profiling, and translational laboratory models. This work has contributed to the identification of potential diagnostic markers and emerging therapeutic approaches for sebaceous carcinoma.

Dr. Rong has also developed and published innovative surgical techniques for complex eyelid, lacrimal, orbital, and ocular surface disorders. His work includes reconstructive approaches following periocular and lacrimal tumor removal, as well as procedures for severe ocular surface injury and total ocular surface reconstruction.

He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, abstracts, and book chapters and has lectured nationally and internationally on cosmetic eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, sebaceous carcinoma, oculoplastic oncology, orbital surgery, ocular surface reconstruction, and advanced reconstructive techniques. His research has been supported by grant and philanthropic funding and published in leading ophthalmology journals.
